By far, the most common argument I see made against atheists is that while they have moral standards, they do not have a defense of morality and therefore are “borrowing” from a Theistic (e.g. Christian) worldview every time they make a moral statement. This is presented as evidence that atheists have an internal contradiction in their worldview whereby they are not allowed to make any moral statements because they cannot account for the origin – or source – of morality.

Presuppositional Atheism

I assert that atheism (“no gods”) is the only presupposition that actually accurately describes all spiritual religions. Therefore, every religion that asserts a spiritual realm must borrow from a materialistic worldview in order to explain the spiritual. Because every explanation of the spiritual requires using materialistic terms (any term involving time/space) then this shows the religion is entirely materialistic in nature, thus demonstrating that it has an internal contradiction and is, therefore, false.
Testing your Faith

Christians talk all the time about “getting to know God”. What I think they mean is “solidifying your personal theology so that you feel comfortable”. That’s all. Because if you talk to two Christians (take for example, my dad and Doug) one would think they were talking about a completely different person by the way they talk about God and what they say about him. They cannot possibly know this God, but they could possibly be inventing interpretations of the same data.
Holy Spirit?

The conversation in my last post is honing in on what I hold to be a keystone issue in the Christian argument: whether the Holy Spirit exists or not.
From my perspective, all the intelligent arguments within the Christian faith are bunk if the Holy Spirit’s presence cannot be demonstrated.
Theists prove god does not exist

Any theism which depends upon human agency to produce a divine effect does not have a divine cause, but a purely human one.
Whenever God does not show up, Christians blame human behavior.
Hmmmmm… well, I guess we are just not doing this god thing right. If you do it just right, *poof*, he appears. Like a divine seance…
One Obvious God

A friend recently posted this on Facebook:
“Just an encouragement to you all… no matter what you’re facing… good or bad, try to see God in it. Try to see how He’s working, what He wants you to learn through it all. I know sometimes life hurts and things don’t make sense… but sometimes those are the things that God uses to get our attention. Even through hurt… God is doing something new. ” [Emphasis mine]
The irony should be apparent. God is so obvious (so “self-evident”) that even if Christians themselves are not looking damn hard for His presence in their lives they just might miss Him completely…
An open letter to my family

Dear family,
It has been almost one year since I realized fully that I could no longer believe the tenets of Christianity in just about any form. I searched high and low, studied the Bible diligently, studied the apologetic arguments deeply, and talked to probably hundreds of individuals from family members to professors to pastors to other students at Moody Bible Institute. Many of you may remember my initial notes on Facebook. At that time I was simply trying desperately for any individual who could provide sufficient Christian answers to questions which already had excellent answers outside the faith. The responses I received from Christians pushed me further away from the faith. The occassional hatred, predictability, and clear lack of critical thinking in so many responses convinced me that the Holy Spirit could not be indwelling those who were posting on my notes.
I simply could no longer believe…
Skeptic / Christian cross-talk

All last year I had an internal battle going on. On the one hand, if someone could show me that the Christianity I grew up with was true, I wanted to listen and was willing to admit I was wrong about becoming an atheist. On the other, I was only truly hoping they would have [...]
The truth?

Let us consider our options. If a higher being exists which knows the truth about our existence, given the state of our world it either has done a poor job communicating this message or does not want to communicate this message or we are not listening. Great men have listened and sought intently and come [...]
The Void Within

When I was studying apologetics, one of the arguments that stuck out the most to me was one popularized by C.S.Lewis. It goes like this: If I have a desire that nothing in this world can satisfy, I must have been created for another world. As a Christian, this fit perfectly with the notion that [...]
